Developmental Editing

What is it?

This is the big picture type of editing. It is a thorough and in-depth look at the manuscript as a whole to examine tone and writing style, identify strengths and weaknesses, and ensure that it conveys the message the author intends in the best way for the target audience.

For non-fiction, a developmental edit will help the author to develop their ideas and to structure and organise their manuscript, as well as to identify where more research needs to be done.

For fiction novels, the developmental edit will also look at character development and world building, spot any plot holes or inconsistencies, and identify areas which the author may need to research more fully.

Who needs it?

Authors who have an unpolished manuscript (such as a first draft which needs direction) and who need some guidance to take it to the next level.
